A maioria de nós neste site fica um pouco tonta com uma boa homologação especial. Mas apesar de todas as promoções que ajudaram seus respectivos fabricantes a obter grande sucesso nas corridas, há inúmeras outras que nunca foram entregues onde mais importava. O Ford RS200, por exemplo, estreou-se no Grupo B durante o último ano da época, em 1986, e lutou para acompanhar o ritmo da frente. É uma história semelhante para o Citroen BX 4TC, mas embora o RS200 seja amplamente considerado uma lenda do Grupo B, apesar da falta de títulos, o ritmo lamentável do 4TC levou seu fabricante a destruir todos os carros de produção que ainda não haviam sido vendidos. Felizmente, o mesmo destino não aconteceu com o Nissan Pulsar (ou Sunny aqui na Grã-Bretanha) GTI-R como o que está à venda aqui.
Embora a redução do conjunto de regras do Grupo B para o Grupo A em 1988 tenha sido impopular no início, com monstros semelhantes a protótipos abrindo caminho para hatchbacks despojados com pelo menos metade da potência, isso acabou levando a um boom no interesse dos fabricantes. Entre eles estava a Nissan, que viu a família Lancia correr em círculos em torno da concorrência e pensou: ‘poderíamos fazer isso com o Sunny.’ E assim começou a preparar uma versão quente do seu hatch leve e sombrio para homologá-lo para os ambientes brutais do Campeonato Mundial de Rally.
Foi uma batalha difícil desde o início. Os regulares da série, Lancia e Toyota, já tinham anos de experiência em ralis e, com vários títulos entre eles, os ataques ocasionais da Nissan ao WRC renderam um punhado de vitórias nas duas décadas anteriores. Isso não o impediu de usar tudo em seu arsenal para trazer o Sunny de acordo com as especificações, incluindo a instalação de um sistema de tração nas quatro rodas, turboalimentar o motor SR20 de quatro potenciômetros e colocar um intercooler enorme em cima dele, resultando na protuberância do capô com aberturas espalhadas por todo o lugar.
Ser um carro do Grupo A significava que a versão de estrada era quase idêntica ao carro de rali, embora com um interior real. O GTI-R de produção manteve o sistema de tração integral da máquina WRC, reuniu impressionantes 230 cv no formato JDM Pulsar como este (as versões europeias Sunny desenvolveram um pouco menos devido às regras de emissões) e poderia atingir 62 mph a partir da paralisação em 5,4 segundos.
